Depression affects one's thinking, feelings and behavior. It is not anyone's fault. It does not represent weakness, a lack of control, or being unable to "get it together". Occuring on a spectrum that runs from mild to severe with many variations in between, depressive disorders can be triggered by the environment, hereditary and biological factors, or by internal or external stressors. Depressive disorders can be lethal in their most severe form.
Treatment includes identifying the source of negative thoughts and mood, while supporting a client to gain understanding, insight, and control over their mood, while restoring a positive, healthy sense of themselves and their lives. Depression often cannot be healed fully on its own. -
Today, the the "traditional family" has evolved to include many culturally and structurally different forms. With these changes, new demands and challenges may occur. Almaden Institute therapists provide a full range of services to facilitate solutions for many of today's family issues.
Here are 5 tips for reconnecting with your family:
Clear a minimum of 3 hours each week and designate it "family time" or "couple time".
Involve family members in brainstorming and choosing what to do during "family time" (home improvement projects, games, picnics, outings, movie time, crafts, plan a trip).
Eat atleast 3 meals per week together, at the same table with no phones or electronics on.
Listen to each other to understand NOT to correct.
Acknowledge and compliment one positive attribute about your child and/or spouse each day.

Teenagers are unique! Mercurial, intense, pressured and trying to figure out who they are in the world. They're full of intensity, whether it be defiance, anger, depression, anxiety, sadness or energy, and this can present a challenge for parents and families to understand and intereact with.
Our therapists understand the developmental needs of teens and can help with struggles whether it be with friends, school, emotional conflicts, family, relationship issues, alcohol and drugs, or mood disorders. Teens and their parents need an experienced therapist who they can trust will not judge, but lend support to navigate these often challenging years.

Any kind of change, whether positive, negative or neutral can create stress.
Anytime we transition from one situation to the next, there is loss, letting go of the old, and working to accept something new. A new homeostasis is trying to establish itself and this can be stressful.
Working with a therapist in a confidential setting can help provide a sounding board to sort through your thoughts and emotions, as well as help to solve challenges new situations bring.
Change can become opportunity with understanding and clarity.
Unwanted changes propose an often difficult challenge to us emotionally and often leaves us in pain.
It is hard to reconcile some of the hardship life brings, and this can throw us into emotional upheaval, grief and sometimes depression.
It is important that you don't suffer alone. Having a safe person to vent to, share with, and receive emotional support from, can provide a refuge.
A therapist offers non-judgement, patience, and understanding that can help you process and begin to heal.
